The 2018 Kansas 811 Run

More than 1,000 people attended the fourth annual Kansas 811 Run on Saturday, August 11 in downtown 2018 KS811 Race StartWichita. Many local utility companies joined in spreading the 811 message, with 24 sponsors donating to the race and sharing the importance of using the 811-notification system before all digging projects.

The Kansas 811 Run celebrates National 811 Day in Wichita, reminding everyone of the importance to always call 811 before starting any digging project. Because of the popularity of this year’s event, Kansas 811 donated $4,127.90 to the Kansas Food Bank.

“It turned out to be bigger and better than years past,” said Russ Baxter2018 KS811 Charity of Kansas 811, one of the race organizers. “We were able to reach out to over a thousand people spreading the message of using the 811-notification system. It was a very positive experience.” Other race organizers include Kip Hawkins, Payton Kolbeck and Matt Brunett of Paradigm, and Rebecca Dietrich of Flint Hills Resources.

The run included food vendors, music, inflatables and other kids’ attractions, and was a success for local utilities companies, the public, and the message of calling 811 before you dig. Thunder Dog, the mascot of the Wichita Thunder hockey team, signed autographs and took pictures with fans while passing out 811 materials. Local first responders also attended.
